If you can’t wait to get back to Monterey, you’re in good company. Here’s the most up-to-date information about the second installment of the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning series. Spoilers follow.
Who’s returning? Like a Monterey fundraising event, anyone who’s anyone will be there. Original cast members Reese Witherspoon (Madeline MacKenzie), Nicole Kidman (Celeste Wright), Shailene Woodley (Jane Chapman), Laura Dern (Renata Klein), Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie Carlson), Adam Scott (Ed Mackenzie), James Tupper (Nathan Carlson), Gordon Klein (Jeffrey Nordling), Kathryn Newton (Abigail Carlson), Iain Armitage (Ziggy Chapman), Robin Weigert (Dr. Amanda Reisman), Merrin Dungey (Detective Adrienne Quinlan), and Sarah Sokolovic (Tori Bachman) are all set to reprise their roles.
Who’s new in town? Meryl Streep has joined the cast as Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise Wright alongside other newbies, Bonnie’s mother Elizabeth (played by Crystal Fox) and second-grade teacher Michael Perkins (actor Mo McRae). Additionally, director Andrea Arnold (American Honey) will take over behind the camera.
What will it be about? The darkly comedic drama will continue to explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Multiple characters will be dealing with Perry’s death, and the prospect of moving past a life-altering event. In short: Things could get messy.
How many episodes will there be? Seven. Season 1 writer David E. Kelley will be tackling each script, based on a story by best-selling author Liane Moriarty.
What’s happening behind the scenes? Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will return as executive producers for the series — Kidman through Blossom Films and Witherspoon through Hello Sunshine — along with Arnold, Kelley, and Season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée.
Additional executive producers will be Per Saari, Bruna Papandrea, Nathan Ross and Gregg Fienberg.
How will I survive the wait? Re-binge the first season, of course. Head to HBO NOW or HBO GO to find every episode, and check out this guide while you watch.
Is there still time to start? Absolutely. Check out the first episode below for free, no HBO subscription required, and start getting hooked.
Marco Pigossi Comes to Netflix
Netflix announced Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi has joined Netflix for a series of projects.
With a prolific career in both television and theater, the 29-year-old actor was launched into stardom in 2010 with his portrait of Cássio in the soap opera “Caras e Bocas”. Since then he has been bringing life to leading roles in various Brazilian hits and now ventures into a broader canvas: the actor will also star two upcoming series at Netflix, presenting his work to millions of people around the world in the 190 countries where the platform is available.
Marco Pigossi joins the main cast of Tidelands, a supernatural crime drama, and the first Australian Netflix original series. The project is also a first in Pigossi’s career, being his debut in acting in English.
Later in the year, back in Brazil, Pigossi lands the leading role in Netflix Brazilian Original live-action series Invisible Cities, created and directed by renowned Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Saldanha. The series, that will have its production started by the end of 2018, portrays an underground world inhabited by mythical creatures evolved from a deep lineage of Brazilian folklore.
“We are thrilled to have a talent like Marco Pigossi joining Netflix. Marco has had such an influence on Brazilian culture, and we couldn’t be more excited to be apart of his journey to reach and entertain a global audience.”, says Tesha Crawford, Netflix’s Director of International Originals Content.
“This is a great moment for me, embracing the opportunity as an actor to live the plurality and creative challenges that a partnership with Netflix presents. To have this cultural exchange and film with actors and crew from different nationalities is a huge learning, even more knowing that people all around the world will watch the result. And now also having the privilege of working in my own country with such an amazing creator as Carlos Saldanha. It is an amazing opportunity!” says Marco Pigossi.

We’re ready to add Hache to our growing list of Spanish series intended for global audiences.”

Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” Begins Production
Cameras rolled today on esteemed filmmaker Clint Eastwood’s next feature film, a drama entitled “The Mule,” from Warner Bros. Pictures and Imperative Entertainment. In addition to directing, the veteran actor will step in front of the lens again, alongside fellow stars Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña and Dianne Wiest, as well as Alison Eastwood, Taissa Farmiga and Ignacio Serricchio.
Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he’s just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. He does well—so well, in fact, that his cargo increases exponentially, and Earl is assigned a handler. But he isn’t the only one keeping tabs on Earl; the mysterious new drug mule has also hit the radar of hard-charging DEA agent Colin Bates. And even as his money problems become a thing of the past, Earl’s past mistakes start to weigh heavily on him, and it’s uncertain if he’ll have time to right those wrongs before law enforcement, or the cartel’s enforcers, catch up to him.
“The Mule” marks Oscar-winner Eastwood’s first time on both sides of the camera since he starred in 2009’s critically acclaimed “Gran Torino.”
Cooper, who stars as Bates, received his most recent Oscar nominations for his work with Eastwood, acting in and producing “American Sniper.” Oscar nominee Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It,” TV’s “Black-ish”) plays a DEA special agent in charge; Peña (upcoming “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” Netflix’s “Narcos”) plays a fellow agent; Oscar winner Wiest (“Bullets Over Broadway,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” TV’s “Life in Pieces”) plays Earl’s ex-wife; Alison Eastwood (“Rails & Ties”) plays Earl’s daughter; Farmiga (upcoming “The Nun”) plays the role of Earl’s granddaughter; and Serricchio (Netflix’s “Lost in Space,” “The Wedding Ringer”) plays Earl’s cartel handler.
Clint Eastwood (“Sully,” “American Sniper”) directs from a screenplay by Nick Schenk (“Gran Torino”). Eastwood also produces the film under his Malpaso banner, along with Tim Moore, Kristina Rivera and Jessica Meier, and Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas. The film’s executive producers are Dave Bernad, Ruben Fleischer and Todd Hoffman. Imperative’s Jillian Apfelbaum will co-produce.
The film will be shooting primarily in Georgia and New Mexico. “The Mule” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in Association with Imperative Entertainment. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
