After significant contributions to film, theatre and TV, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch was awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015. The classically trained actor has captured audiences’ imaginations with riveting performances in Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Doctor Strange and more recently Avengers: Infinity War.

In 2018, after a visit to the Jaeger‑LeCoultre Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, he joined La Grande Maison at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie as Global Brand Ambassador.

Benedict Cumberbatch first became familiar with Jaeger‑LeCoultre when filming the movie Doctor Strange where his character wears the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual with a romantic engraving on the back that is part of the plotline. The actor explains:

Watches are a key character prop in my role as Dr Strange, so when the time came for me to choose one it had to fit a man of status. The Jaeger‑LeCoultre watch spoke to me most about classic elegance, but what really captured my imagination was this idea that the watch was given to him by someone who he loved – it came from the heart of someone who knew his tastes, making it more than just an object of status.

About his manufacture visit last January, the actor shares his impressions:

When I visited the manufacture in Switzerland what made the biggest impression on me was the legacy of skills from craftsmen who have worked there all their lives. I couldn’t believe the sheer dexterity of manual work going on there that I had assumed was done by a machine or computer. It was astounding to watch the enamel work on the back of a Reverso. Learning how mechanisms work, seeing their complexity up-close and watching the Sphérotourbillon being assembled was really, really fascinating.”

He reveals what his favorite part of the visit was by adding: “My absolute highlight was meeting the people who make the Jaeger‑LeCoultre watches and seeing them at work.”

With a burgeoning 2018 schedule, Benedict Cumberbatch can now be seen in Avengers: Infinity War, reprising the role of Doctor Strange, under the direction of brothers Anthony and Joe Russo. This will be followed later in 2018 by Cumberbatch’s performances in How to Stop Time based on the book turned screenplay by Anthony McCarten and feature films The Grinch and Mowgli. Cumberbatch also stars in the Sky/Showtime miniseries Patrick Melrose aired in May.
