Baselworld 2017 – It’s a wrap!

Published

on

Baselworld, the world’s leading trendsetting show for the watch and jewellery industry, has come to an end. This 2017 Centenary Edition was rich in discoveries and encounters, filled with excitement and satisfaction. The impressions from the show were positive and we received numerous articles from watch geeks and jewellery lovers who praised our Baselworld new collections.

The essence of watchmaking

Jamie Tan from Luxuo had the pleasure to interview Chopard’s Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, who “has spent the past 20 years developing Chopard’s manufacturing capabilities, and the brand has much to leverage on thanks to this.”

In the interview, Mr. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele talks about the essence of watchmaking, his passion for classic cars and their associated races, the 20th Anniversary of Chopard’s Manufacture and other fascinating watchmaking specifics. To quote Luxuo « In many ways, Scheufele is a holdover from an earlier era when owners, guided by their personal interests, had a direct hand in — and heavy influence on — the activities of their companies. »

L.U.C  XPS Twist QF Fairmined and what makes it special

One of the Chopard hits at Baselworld this year was the L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined model. Frank Chuo from Deployant wrote a fabulous review that we are delighted to share with you. It speaks of our long-term project The Journey to Sustainable Luxury and our commitment towards fairmined gold, of the beauty of the watch’s dial design “inspired by the raw composition of gold nuggets extracted from mines” and its certifications, i.e. Fleurier and COSC.

L.U.C Luna One or moonlight on platinum

This new limited edition of the flagship model encountered great success at Baselworld, and it is no wonder why as it is such a beauty, “Graced with harmonious proportions and exceptional elegance” as stated by the WatchQuote in a recent article that provides a full description of this marvel. So check it out to discover all of the L.U.C Lunar One’s glorious haute horlogerie features, pictures from all angles and full technical details. As described by Watchquote, “The Lunar One is indeed a rare watch – and not only because it is issued in a one-hundred piece limited edition.”

Mille Miglia collection caused quite a stir this year

2017 was a big year for our Mille Miglia Collection, as the eponymous race turns 90 this year. An occasion for Chopard to celebrate the event by issuing a 90-piece Mille Miglia Classic XL 90th Anniversary Limited Edition. Watch Collecting Lifestyle states that “Its unmistakable presence on the wrist, its L.U.C chronograph movement and its wealth of details make it the most prestigious Mille Miglia watch ever introduced by Chopard.” and we couldn’t agree more. Get full coverage on this timepiece with exclusive photos.

In addition to the new Mille Miglia Anniversary Edition, we were pleased to present the annual Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Watch for 2017 at Baselworld. Travis Cannata from A Blog To Watch provides a full description of this new model For Him… and For Her, complete with suggestions for the dress code: “I would still enjoy wearing this Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph with a suit or a T-shirt, as I feel it is a great example of a watch that melds sporty and dressy in the same design.”

Chopard jewellery, charming collections for ladies

This year, Happy Hearts are joined by a variant in diamonds and malachite — the ‘positive energy’ stone.” reports Dr Melvyn Teillol-Foo from AlphaLuxe. The article also features the For You Collection whose  “goal was to bring a light and airy feel to High Jewellery with cherry blossoms as the main theme. Just in time for Spring and just For You, the white gold jewellery sets feature rings and earrings studded with diamonds or emeralds.”

L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the dog Artistic crafts share unique perspectives

Published

on

The elegance, the refinement and the technical nature of the ultra-thin L.U.C XP Urushi watch have made it a cult model. Each year, Chopard draws inspiration from the repertoire of Chinese astrology to offer a fresh interpretation of its Urushi dial, an ancestral Japanese technique. Staging an encounter between beauty and precision, East and West, Chopard places creativity at the heart of cultural ties and of its commitment to perpetuating traditions.

2018 marks the celebration of the Year of the Dog. Its iconography, its universal symbolism and its mythological strength are showcased in an exceptional L.U.C watch issued in an 88-piece limited series: The L.U.C XP Urushi –Year of the dog. This masterpiece of fine craftsmanship began with an encounter between two perspectives. That of the Urushi master and of the master-watchmaker at Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, both intently focused on their work. The deft hands decorating the dial of the L.U.C XP Urushi, just like those capable of developing and producing the L.U.C 96.17-L calibre, perpetuate time-honoured skills bearing authentic testimony to their respective cultures. Together, they celebrate the Year of the Dog, the 11th sign of the Chinese zodiac, for a year dedicated to generosity and loyalty.

Generosity meets loyalty

In the Chinese zodiac, each sign is the expression of a distinctive nature. The entire range of qualities associated with the dog is thus reflected in the L.U.C XP Urushi – Year of the Dog watch. Eager for justice, sensitive and faithful by nature, dogs devote all their strength to serving others, without ever impinging on others’ freedom. Their devotion withstands every trial and when they love, it is for life. They also cultivate an attitude to work based on commitment, personal involvement and a serious-minded attitude that implies making the most of individual skills, giving true meaning to their existence, and basically leading a useful, honest and consistent life. Dogs are builders and protectors demonstrating unfailing loyalty. Chopard has decided to embody this canine through a representative of the extremely beautiful Asian ‘Akita’ breed, depicted in a lush natural setting dotted with wild orchids and enhanced by the fluttering presence of a dragonfly, regarded as a lucky charm and a good omen.

Urushi: a time-honoured art

Urushi is an ancestral lacquer technique. Its name stems from the tree whose resin is patiently harvested, once a year, in very small quantities. Three to five years after being collected, the resin is treated in such a way as to become a highly resistant lacquer applied in a number of extremely fine layers. The Urushi Master then imprisons within it a number of tiny iridescent particles that endow it with distinctive depth, luminosity, and exquisitely fine nuances. Only a rare few artists have the skills required to perform this technique. Chopard called upon Master Kiichiro Masumaro to oversee the creation of the L.U.C XP Urushi dials. He is recognised as a master of his art and has been raised to the status of “national human treasure” in Japan. The dials were executed by the Urushi Grand Master Minori Koizumi. For this collaborative endeavour, Chopard secured the services of the Yamada Heiando company, official purveyor to the Japanese imperial family.

An exceptional watch Manufacture

An exceptional movement was needed to give life to this dial. At the heart of the ultra-thin case measuring 39.5 mm in diameter and 6.8 mm thick beats the mechanical self-winding L.U.C 96.17-L movement. Equipped with two barrels ensuring a 65-hour power reserve by means of Twin® technology, this calibre achieves the feat of fitting inside such a slim case thanks to the off-centred 22-carat gold micro-rotor. It is bevelled, engraved and guilloché, while the bridges are adorned with Côtes de Genève. This sophisticated movement decoration and finishing is performed by expert hands at Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, in accordance with the highest aesthetic quality standards of traditional watchmaking. The calibre is visible through the transparent exhibition back of the 18-carat rose gold case. A single glance reveals a tradition and a fascinating range of deft skills ranging from Switzerland to Asia, shaping the frontiers of a universal dialogue revolving around the spirit of excellence.

Happy Ocean: A colorful nautical adventure

Published

on

Ever since it was launched, the Happy Sport collection has been an undeniable success. Over the years, it has been enriched with original creations, occasionally offbeat but consistently delightful. This year, Chopard is once again reinvigorating this iconic collection with the new Happy Ocean. Both sporty and elegant, Happy Ocean is the ideal watch for exploring the ocean floor, relaxing on a yacht or strolling on the sand.

For more than 20 years, the Happy Sport line has delighted fans of chic, sporty watches. The first of its kind when it was launched in 1993, the concept combines the nobility of diamonds with steel. Free of any setting, diamonds frolic between two sapphire crystals, illuminating the entire dial. Each model breathes new life to the collection. In the case of Happy Ocean, it’s a sea breeze that is energising the Happy Sport universe!

Happy Ocean focuses on a nautical adventure. Combined with a large 40 mm steel case, the unidirectional rotating bezel with its two-tone blue-turquoise or blue-raspberry colour is inspired by azure blue shades and brightly colored corals, while featuring a wave-shaped design for easier handling under water. The screw-down crown is marked with a C and the case-back is engraved with a wave motif.

The intense blue dial brings to mind the ocean depths and is enhanced with a white minutes hand hemmed with blue or raspberry that glows at night or in dark, deep waters. The hour-markers and hours hands also illuminate with a blue hue, with all other indications required for diving in green. Five moving diamonds, like oxygen bubbles or tiny sparkling fish, swim around this beautiful aquarium.

The brightly coloured straps in turquoise or raspberry rubber, adorned with a ripple motif, are designed to withstand the effects of sand and water, as too is the navy blue NATO strap – a first in Chopard’s ladies’ collections – that is supplied with the watch.

Happy Ocean also comes in a precious jewellery version. An 18-carat white case, a navy blue mother-of-pearl dial framed by a fixed bezel set with diamonds, sapphires and either rubies or topazes : these new variations endowing the collection with sparkling alternatives are fitted with an alligator leather strap and a NATO strap in the same navy blue shade.

Water-resistant to 300 metres for the polished version and to 100 for the gemset interpretation, the Happy Ocean watch is powered by a self-winding Chopard movement (01.01-C) entirely developed and produced in the workshops of the Maison in Fleurier.

A porthole opening onto an endless world of seaside pleasures, Happy Ocean is an invitation to head for the open waters. Inspiring daydreams of a sunny, warm day on the beach, this timepiece conjures up images of that perfect summer dip in the shimmering blue sea.
